- PUBLIC FORUM 6:30 p.m. on October 2, 2018- Prof. Carolyn Colvin, UI College of Education. Citizenship classes and youth mentorship in West Liberty.
Carolyn Colvin has been a powerful advocate for education and cultural connections in West Liberty for many years. She has taught adult ESL and literacy classes here in West Liberty for over 25 years. Through those years she has made connections with hundreds of immigrants and their families and made a real difference in their lives. In recent years she has worked with the local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens and the West Liberty teachers’ union on a citizenship program that has helped dozens prepare for the naturalization process.
In addition to her work in the wider West Liberty community, Carolyn has worked with the West Liberty schools to increase opportunities for students. She helped establish and facilitates the West Liberty Enrichment Program at the University of Iowa that “offers mentoring and enrichment programming to recruit and retain First Generation, underrepresented West Liberty students who attend the University of Iowa.” Additionally she coordinates an annual campus visit to the University of Iowa for all West Liberty High School sophomores. This coming fall she has arranged for West Liberty 8th graders to complete a project around the American Dream that will include a Cashore Marionettes performance at Hancher.
