After a successful run, the Community Garden has been retired. Many thanks to Rotarian Steve Hinkouse for heading up this effort!
Report from the 2012 growing season
Excessive heat and lack of rainfall notwithstanding, the Community Garden project produced 1700 lb. of locally grown vegetables during the 2012 growing season. Most of this production was delivered to the culinary department at Simpson Memorial Home. Some of the production was also donated to the food pantry at First Church United in West Liberty and to the Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center in West Branch.
Dani Wright-Urquhart, RD and Food Service Supervisor at Simpson Memorial Home, valued the donated produce at $2,500.
Rotarians participating in the growing activities are Steve Hinkhouse (supervisor) with assistance from Ann Hinkhouse, Tom and Mary Pat Brooke and Nancy Knight-Barr. Additionally, the West Liberty Heritage Foundation supplied the water for the elevated growing boxes at the Depot garden site. The Community Garden was made possible also by others in our community who gave generously of their time and labor to this food production effort.
