West Liberty Community Hygiene Supply Drive

Dear West Liberty Community Member,

Local families need your help! Today, 6,300 Muscatine County households are struggling to meet their most basic needs. Over 4,300 of those households consist of adults who are working and earning more than the federal poverty level, but less than the basic cost of living for Muscatine County.

This year, as part of Giving Tuesday, United Way of Muscatine is hosting a Community Hygiene Supply Drive to help ensure local families have basic hygiene supplies. We are requesting that local businesses, civic, and faith-based organizations collect hygiene supplies for the community-wide drive from November 13th - November  26th, 2023. Supplies will be available for distribution to local families on Giving Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Needed items include: laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, Kleenex, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, deodorant, feminine products, combs/hair brushes, and lotion.

The supplies collected can be picked up on Monday, November 27th or dropped off at the West Liberty Food Pantry located at 1100 N. Calhoun Street between 12:00pm-3:00pm. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution, please note that the funds are to be designated to the West Liberty Community Hygiene Supply Drive. We will then purchase needed supplies. West Liberty Food Pantry personnel will distribute supplies to those in need. All donations will stay in the West Liberty School District!

If you would like to host a Community Hygiene Supply Drive or make a donation, please fill out this electronic pledge form or call Hilary at 563-279-4237 to register your drive.  Please contact Hilary at 563-263-249-4237 or hilary@unitedwaymuscatine.org with any questions.

When we choose to Live United, we can create a better tomorrow together.

Kind Regards,

Hilary Henke

Welcome to Week 4 of RI’s Month of Economic & Community Development.

This is also the week we celebrate World Polio Day, which happens every October 24.

The news this week is a kaleidoscope of the good things TRF, along with the World Health Organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others entities are doing to eradicate Poliomyelitis. Like Iowa Rotarians, Peter Teahen and John Ockenfels, who flew over 25,000 miles to more than 22 countries in their bid to raise awareness of polio, Bashar Asfour, a member of the Rotary Club of Tbilisi Ambassador, Georgia, embarked on a European tour in a Volkswagen bus, starting in Berlin on 31 August. His aim was to raise awareness, gather donations, and inspire new volunteers to fight polio. He visited 16 countries and attended meetings in 38 cities. The journey culminated in Chemnitz, Germany, on October 20 and 21, which coincide with the main Rotary event for World Polio Day in the region.

From Colombia we learned how Rotarians Sonia Uribe and Alberto Londoño launched El Zoo del Amor (stuffed animals wearing shirts with the Rotary logo) to provide comfort to terminally ill children.  The project has raised about US$260,000 that will be spent on polio eradication efforts and vaccinations for more than 76,000 children, nurturing children’s lives and creating a polio-free world.

The Rotary Club of Antananarivo-Mahamasina organized the sixth running of the Urban Trail, uniting clubs in Madagascar’s capital. With more than 4,000 participants on 7-km and 14-km (4.3-mile and 8.7-mile) routes, this event coincided with African Vaccination Week. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the PolioPlus program and the importance of vaccination.  On the Korean island of Jeju, Rotary members in District 3662 and the Sehyang Orchestra organized a concert of traditional Gugak music. This concert was a rare treat for Jeju residents, who have limited access to such events. It was attended by 400 people and raised 16 million won (about US$12,000) for the PolioPlus Fund.

Terry's Polio Eradication Update

image
Dear Polio Eradication Warriors,

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 5 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case - in Pakistan.  .

  • In the lead-up to World Polio Day on 24 October, GPEI has launched a Make Polio History campaign to rally existing and new supporters of polio eradication from all over the world to champion the cause. We need your help! Add your voice in support of eradication by visiting the campaign website and taking action.  https://makepoliohistory.org/
This year, each Rotarian is encouraged to make a personal donation (of a size dictated by their financial situation) to the PolioPlus Fund by World Polio Day.  I made mine last week and am encouraging each of my club members to join me!  And  Club leaders are urged to make sure each donation is recognized as Paul Harris or Major Donor credit.

What can you do to Support World Polio Day?
  1. Register your club’s World Polio Day action by 24 October.
  2. Share the “Make Polio History” video on your social media.
  3. Visit the World Polio Day Resources webpage and find content you can share.
  4. Pitch a story about World Polio Day and your club’s contributions to eradicating polio to a local media outlet.
  5. Learn about the two vaccines used to stop polio transmission — inactivated polio vaccine and oral polio vaccine.
  6. Donate - Make a personal donation to the END POLIO NOW effort.

Each donation made to Rotary’s End Polio Now effort is matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to maximise its effect. As such, if you give US$10 to the effort, as an example, the amount becomes US$30, and with that, 60 children will be vaccinated in the remaining affected countries. Thank you for everything that you do! We wish you a very successful World Polio Day!
