A note from Chair Cliff McFerren:

Last week's meeting was about planning for our 100th year.  President Ken updated us on the items planned so far and then opened the floor to additional ideas and that was a lot of fun.

As the Noon Chair would like everyone to invite a guest, be it a co-worker, family member, nemesis, or stranger to our Final Friday meeting of this year in celebration of a wonderful holiday season and Rotary Christmas.  If you do actually get someone to say yes please let me know in advance so I can tell Donna Alberti.

We will have a bottle of holiday cheer and raise a toast to ole St. Nick and his infant son, baby Jesus.  Let's show our friends and family, nemesises and strangers why our club is the bestest around!  (wow, this bottle of Christmas cheer is really real;u gud).  Merry Christmas Everyone!

Dates are as follows:

  • December 15th
NO MEETING Dec 22nd or 29th

Volunteer Times are:
  • Friday December 15, 3-4pm to help in delivering food boxes AND again 4:30-7pm to help load boxes into cars as they drive up.
  • Saturday, December 16, approximately 50 fruit sacks will need to be picked up by volunteers 8-9 am for delivery to senior citizens AND. again to help with drive up for food and toys 9-10 am.
Volunteers are needed for all of these “events” so decide if/when you can help.  If you know people not on this list who might be willing to help, please share.

The Rotary Club of West Liberty hit another stellar year with Project Warm!

Locally in West Liberty, every year, the Rotary Club of West Liberty helps provide coats to all ages within the local community.

Feedback from Rotary Club of West Liberty President Ken Brooks:
I am incredibly heartened by the overwhelming success of this year's Project Warm. The generosity and community spirit demonstrated through this initiative have truly exemplified the core values of Rotary. I am thrilled that, together, we raised over $2,000 to purchase new coats. This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about the kindness and compassion prevalent within our community. Additionally, the outpouring of support in the form of gently used coat donations significantly bolstered our efforts. It is a testament to the communal spirit that defines West Liberty. The impact of this project is quantifiable not just in the funds raised or coats collected, but in the real, tangible difference we have made in our community. Distributing 335 coats to those in need is a milestone that each one of us can be proud of. It reflects our commitment to service and our ability to come together to support our neighbors in times of need. I extend my heartfelt thanks to every member of the Rotary Club and the wider community who contributed to this cause. Your generosity has provided warmth and comfort to many, and it's moments like these that truly underscore the essence of what it means to be a part of Rotary. Let's continue to work together with this same spirit of service and unity as we undertake future projects, always striving to make a positive impact in the lives of those around us.
Foundation updates from Chair Bill Koellner:

We have a few members that are motivated to eradicate polio by with polio flight, they have supported other District causes to help the fight to end polio.  While the club pledged $1500,  members have donated $2800 themselves in addition towards the fight again ending polio. The club  has 3 polio plus society members too that make an annual $100 yearly donation.

Also , West liberty club again this year is a 100% trf club. The club has been 100% since 1999. 24 years 100% and since 2003 when records started have been in top 3 per capita giving in District 6000 and in zone 29 as top 5 per capita givers. Wl has 6 paul Harris society members. Also, District 6000 has a reputation of 70% of Rotarians giving $100/Rotarian giving. This is highest in North America. West Liberty has a proud reputation going into its 100-year history.

Since the District Grant program began, now called Community Service Grants, West Liberty has every year used the funds returned to the District to complete projects locally. Many clubs do not use grant money to improve their Communities

Welcome to Week ONE of RI’s Month of Disease Prevention & Treatment.

Somewhere in Grahamstown on the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, a secondary school struggled with sanitation problems. The facilities at the Ntsika Senior Secondary School, with about 760 students ages 12-20, were practically nonfunctional. The school had limited access to water, had only eight toilets, which frequently clogged, and the sewage tank always overflowed and created a kind of swamp outside. “They had an inconsistent water supply. When the water is shut off, the schools have to shut,” says Stuart Palmer, a past district governor in Wyoming; “You cannot have school if you don’t have water. We were seeing the children shortchanged in their education.” Together with the Rotary Club of Grahamstown, fundraisers from Rotary Club of Jackson Hole, WY, applied for a Global Grant of US$109,000 from TRF and raised US$48,000 in contributions, including donations from other clubs and a remarkable US$20,000 from nonmembers. The Grahamstown club got to work, installing water tanks, repairing the gutters and sewage system, and completely remodeling Ntsika’s kitchen and toilet facilities.  Unfortunately, Ntsika was one of eight schools with the same sanitation issues. Ken Small, a member of the club in Wyoming recalls; “So we said, ‘Well, let’s do another school.’ And to avoid the fatigue factor of having to do seven or eight applications, we said, ‘Let’s go for broke.’ We started a grant for all seven schools.”

According to https://www.rotary.org/en/audacious-request-transforms-south-african-schools, the result was the largest Rotary Global Grant ever awarded to a club or district in South Africa. Totaling approximately 7.6 million rand (US$400,000), it pays for extensive renovations. Each school is getting new plumbing, new toilets, new tile and mirrors, and refurbished kitchens. Security gates and bars are being installed to prevent vandalism. To keep the facilities in good repair, staff members and parent volunteers are being trained in maintenance. The project, which began in July of 2023, looks toward a completion date of March 2024.
Kudos to the Rotary Clubs of Grahamstown, South Africa and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA for this Disease Prevention project!

It's Week 2 of RI’s Month of Disease Prevention & Treatment.

The 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) began last week and will end on Tuesday, December 12 at Expo City, Dubai in the United Arab EmiratesAt this year’s annual climate conference, 70,000 delegates from 197 countries negotiate global goals for tackling climate change, present their countries’ plans for contributing to those goals and report on their progress. Rotary International has long worked to protect the environment by collaborating with communities to implement clean water and sanitation, alleviate poverty, and promote sustainable energy technologies; so it’s no surprise that Rotary is participating for the third time in the 28-year history of the COP. In a report by Etelka Lehoczky, Rotary experts are hosting more than two dozen sessions at the 28th United Nations climate conference, addressing how a changing climate intersects with health, poverty, and other factors. Recognizing the central role of young people in shaping a sustainable future, Rotary is sponsoring 22 youth volunteers to attend COP28. This amplifies young voices in the climate discussion and offers the volunteers learning opportunities and international experience. From supporting vulnerable populations to forging partnerships across the public and private sectors, Rotary members are motivating progress and inspiring action on the environment. Members in the United Arab Emirates are planting 50,000 mangrove trees in partnership with the government. The restoration of mangrove forests, which help protect coastlines and marine life, is a Rotary priority.

The Rotary Foundation has committed more than US$23.7 million toward environmental projects led by Rotary members around the world.

TRF’s Chair of Trustees, Rotarian Barry Rassin is among notables from RI at the COP 28 conference.
